The range will be open every Monday from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., beginning March 16, and Mondays from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., beginning May 4, until October when the time will change to 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. The range will remain open until Nov. 16, 2020, when it will close for the season. Zion Benton, Nation Ford Sweep Podiums at JROTC Air Rifle Service Championships
By Ashley Brugnone, CMP Writer In February, junior ROTC cadets gathered together in the north, south and west to compete in the scholastic JROTC Three-Position Air Rifle Service Championships. Competitors at each location are awarded based on individual scores as well as overall team accomplishments according to military service branch (Army, Navy, Air Force or Marin Corps). Athletes compete in sporter or precision air rifle disciplines. Notable performances were given by sporter team members of Zion Benton High School in Illinois (Navy) as well as sporter members from Nation Ford High School in South Carolina (Marine Corps) – each securing the Top 3 places at their event locations. Because of their talented athletes, the teams ultimately went on to earn first place in their respectable team competitions as well. Also containing place-holding athletes were precision teams Kaiserslautern High School, AE (Air Force, Germany), Joshua High School (Navy) and Granbury (Marine Corps) High Schools, both of Texas. The teams earned two of three spots on the podium. The JROTC Air Rifle Service Championships, conducted by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), were held in three locations: Chandler, AZ; Anniston, AL; and Camp Perry, Ohio, over the weekends of Feb. 6-8 and Feb. 14-16. Rifle athletes in JROTC programs reached the Regional events after competing in the Postal match in the fall. The final step in the JROTC Championship series is the National Championship, scheduled to be held at the Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center at Camp Perry, Ohio, March 19-21. Like the […]

What a difference just an eighth of an inch makes.
Recently I came across on a surprisingly good deal on a Taurus Tracker .44mag snubnose. This one: Taurus isn’t my first choice of firearm brands, but I’ve owned them and generally liked them, and the price on this one was a little too good to pass up. So I got it, figuring that it would […]
Sociology of Guns Class Student Final Reflection #6
As noted previously, for the final assignment of the semester in my Sociology of Guns Seminar in Spring 2019, students were asked to write a 1,000 to 2,000 word essay in which they would: revisit your previous personal experience with and understanding of guns in the U.S. (as expressed, e.g., in the field trip reflection … Continue reading Sociology of Guns Class Student Final Reflection #6
Your Hump Day Reading List for February 26, 2020
Welcome to your Hump Day Reading List!
This is your refuge from the impersonal Google and FaceBook algorithms that seem to run our lives these days. Instead of a machine deciding what you’ll see, I personally go out and look for great articles that actually have value in the quest for greater personal and family safety.
From all of the articles that I find, I weed out the “fake news” and those that don’t have direct application to some aspect of preparedness. Then, to fight the growing scourge of information overload, I distill everything down to what I believe to be the three most useful articles you can read right now, explain the context of those articles, and identify any bias so you can trust what you read.
It’s a more personal, more targeted, and more efficient way to get the information you need!

CMP Recognizes Clubs Celebrating 20 Years or More of Affiliation
By Ashley Brugnone, CMP Writer Since the beginning, the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) has welcomed clubs from around the country to join in the effort of spreading marksmanship competition and safety. With the CMP celebrating its 24th anniversary in 2020, the organization has decided to recognize those Affiliated Clubs that have upheld two decades or more of dependable support, claiming a spot on the 20 Year Affiliated Club list. Over 5,000 Affiliated Clubs have hosted events, matches and clinics over the years – stretching to all corners of the continental U.S. and even beyond into Alaska and Hawaii. Of those, nearly 230 will be awarded with the 20 Year Affiliated Club banner to place at their home ranges, with close to 80 more set to celebrate their second decade next year. The CMP also celebrates the affiliation of 10 Year Clubs, which is approaching a total of 900 in 2020. With the participation of active member clubs, the CMP can extend the outreach of its mission “to promote firearm safety and marksmanship training with an emphasis on youth” and its vision “that every youth in America has the opportunity to participate in firearm safety and marksmanship programs.” The CMP holds in high regard the cooperation of Affiliated Clubs over the past decades and is truly grateful for their participation into the future as the community of advocates work together to expand marksmanship opportunities for generations to come. Learn more about CMP Affiliated Clubs, including how to become one or how […]

Massachusetts Junior Feature: MacKenzie Conant
By Serena Juchnowski, CMP Feature Writer For Billerica, Mass., junior MacKenzie Conant, her marksmanship journey has always been about family. Though she was thrilled to earn her Distinguished Rifleman’s Badge in 2018, she notes that her journey “was fairly ordinary and kind of a blur now.” This does not mean she does not value the distinction of the badge, only that the journey pales in comparison to its unique presentation and what it now represents to her. Distinguished Badges are traditionally presented during the National Matches by the winners of the President’s 100 and National Trophy Individual events. MacKenzie’s older brother, Sgt. Verne Conant of the United States Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU), surprised her by presenting her badge and pinning her on stage. MacKenzie recalls, “Him pinning me on stage was extra special, knowing that he had his own slew of accomplishments while on the AMU that made this possible.” Besides earning her Distinguished Rifleman’s Badge, MacKenzie has her own sets of accomplishments. She started her shooting career in middle school, inspired and helped along by her dad and brother. First came beginning safety courses with .22’s, which her brother Verne helped teach. As she entered high school, MacKenzie found herself competing locally and nationally in smallbore and air rifle with the more advanced juniors of the Reading Rifle and Revolver Club. In 2016, MacKenzie earned a spot in the Junior Olympics by placing as the state high scoring female in smallbore at a Massachusetts Junior Olympic qualifier. After also […]
